Museums in the city of Amsterdam

Amsterdam’s 37 museums offer a very wide range of collections and exhibitions. As well as the best known, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, the Hermitage, the Anne Frank Huis and the Rembrandthuis, there are many smaller and less well-known museums offering specialist collections and special exhibitions.

The Willet-Holthuysen museum, for example, is the only fully restored canal house that's open to the public on a daily basis. On the first floor there is a magnificent ballroom, a dining room, and another looking out over the garden. The basement kitchen gives a good idea of what life must have been like for the servants. The Resistance Museum details the history of the Dutch Resistance in World War II, following occupation by Germany in 1940. The Amsterdam Historical Museum tells the compelling story of the growth and heyday of the Dutch capital. Discover seven centuries of the city's history, from its beginnings as a small settlement on the banks of the Amstel to the bustling metropolis of today. The Houseboat Museum gives you the unique chance to experience what life is like on board a houseboat in an Amsterdam canal. The list goes on…
